Duct tape is an essential item in everyday life, and you can’t stick things together without it. There are many different types of tape, and each is used in different areas.
Today, we will tell you about these testing tests for adhesive tapes.
1. Width & Thickness
Width measurement is the measurement of how wide or narrow the adhesive tape is, the distance across.
Thickness testing provides insight into the specifications of the adhesive tape being produced.
2. Initial Adhesion
When a brief contact occurs between the object and the sticky surface of the pressure-sensitive adhesive tape with a small pressure, the adhesion of the tape to the object is called the initial adhesion.
The good or bad initial adhesion directly affects the quality of the adhesive tape. The commonly used standards for testing initial adhesion are GB-T 4852 and GB/T31125-2014.
- The ring initial adhesion test has become the most reliable testing method in recent years, as it provides repeatable and consistent data. Nowadays, most tape and label manufacturers only report ring initial adhesion data in their publicly available product information.
- Generally use the steel ball number (the larger the nominal diameter of the ball corresponding to the larger steel ball number) so that the adhesive tape can stick to the steel ball number is larger that its initial adhesion is better.
3. Static Shear Adhesion
The ability of a pressure-sensitive adhesive tape to resist damage to the bonding surface caused by balanced shear external forces.
If the adhesive retention is very poor, the tape is easy to fall off, failing to achieve the purpose of bonding; if the adhesive retention is too large, it is easy to break the adhesive when it is separated from the object to be adhered to.
4. Unwind Strength
Unwinding strength is under certain test conditions, so that the roll of adhesive tape unwinding unit width of the load to be applied, expressed in N / mm.
This test provides a closer look at abnormalities that occur when the tape is unwound, such as adhesive migration, tearing or delamination of the substrate.
5. Elongation At Break
Elongation at break is expressed as a percentage (%) and usually refers to the ratio of the displacement of the sample at break to the original length.
This test is a parametric indicator of the toughness of a material! Elongation at break is a very important parameter inside the tensile properties, it usually refers to the elongation throughout the process.
6. Tensile Strength
Tensile strength is the stress that produces the maximum uniform plastic deformation of a material.
This test is an important physical and mechanical property index of adhesive tape. Apply tensile load to the direction of transverse and longitudinal axes of the specimen, and deform it through external force until it is destroyed, to understand the tensile stress of the packaging material. Sample length for tensile test: the longer the length, the greater the chance of weak ring and the lower the strength.
7. Peel Strength
Peel strength is the force required to peel a unit width of adhesive tape from a specific bonding surface at a certain angle and rate.
The peel strength of adhesive tape is an important performance indicator to characterize its adhesive properties. The index value directly reflects the size of the adhesive tape adhesive, through the monitoring of the peel strength of the adhesive tape, can be a good control of its adhesive properties.
8. Aging Test
Aging tests are mainly heat and oxygen aging tests for rubber, plastic products, electrical insulation materials and other materials.
